I saw someone say online that they don't like guitar solos that are "fret wankery." But what does that mean? Does that mean aimless playing, without focus or style? Like a garbled mess? So, for instance, someone is just playing a bunch of notes that don't amount to anything meaningful?

It means musical masturbation.
Wank is aussie for masturbation.
Well, that would describe every single guitar solo played on MTV, VH1 or BET over the past 20 years.
Yeah, I know what wanker means, but what about fret? Like they're worrying about wanking? ;)
Seriously--I don't get the combo and how it relates to music--I get the image from the second word, but not the combo.
And Jeff: Dire Straits summed it up:
Now look at them yo-yo's, that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on that MTV
That ain't workin', that's the way you do it
Money for nothin' and your chicks for free
Now that ain't workin', that's the way you do it
Lemme tell ya, them guys ain't dumb
Maybe get a blister on your little finger
Maybe get a blister on your thumb
Fret like the frets on the finger board.
Oh, I see--I should've known that. :(
